How to Create a Strong Email Password
A strong password protects your email from hackers. Here's how to create one:
What Makes a Strong Password?
- At least 12 characters long
- Mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
- Include numbers
- Add special characters (!, @, #, $, etc.)
- Not a common word or phrase
Easy Method: Use a Passphrase
Create a memorable sentence and modify it:
- Think of a sentence: "I love coffee in the morning"
- Take first letters: "Ilcitm"
- Add numbers: "Ilcitm2024"
- Add special characters: "Ilcitm2024!"
- Final password: Ilcitm2024!
Do not use this exact example: make up your own sentence.
What to Avoid
Never use:
- Your name, birthday, or family names
- Common words like "password" or "123456"
- The same password for multiple accounts
- Personal information (phone number, address)
How to Remember Your Password
- Use a password manager (recommended!)
- 1Password
- LastPass
- Bitwarden
- Write it down and keep it in a safe place (not on your computer!)
- Use a pattern you can remember but others can't guess
Changing Your Mailbox Password
- Log into system.atriomail.com
- Go to Email Mailboxes
- Open the mailbox you want to change
- Use the Reset Password action
- Enter your new strong password
- Update the password in your email apps too!
🚨 Warning: If you change your password, you MUST update it in all your devices (phone, computer, tablet) or email will stop working on those devices!
💡 Pro Tip: A long, unique password you keep in a password manager is safer than a shorter one you change often. Change it right away if you think it may have been exposed.
