How to Add a Custom Domain

Want to use your own domain name for email? Follow this guide to add your custom domain and put its mail records in DNS.

⏱️ Time needed: 15-30 minutes
📋 What you'll need: Access to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)

Step 1: Add Domain in AtrioMail

  1. Log into system.atriomail.com
  2. Go to Email Domains
  3. Click "Add Domain"
  4. Enter your domain name (example: yourdomain.com)
  5. Click "Create"

Each new domain goes through a short automated security check before it can be used.

🔌 Using Cloudflare or Namecheap? Connect the provider under Integrations first and use Sync Domains to import its domains. When you then add one of those domains and it passes the security check, AtrioMail can write the mail records into that zone for you, including the DKIM key. Writing the MX record moves that domain's mail, so add the domain when you are ready to switch. On any other DNS host, add the records by hand as described below (check with us before relying on automation there).

Step 2: Open the DNS Setup dialog

In Email Domains, open the domain's DNS Setup dialog. It lists every record your domain needs, each with a copy button:

  • MX (where other servers deliver your mail): mail.atriomail.com, priority 10
  • SPF (which servers may send as your domain)
  • DMARC
  • The DKIM key and the Amazon SES verification records, once they have been generated

Copy each value from the dialog rather than typing it, and never copy record values from an article: they are specific to your domain.

Step 3: Add the DNS Records

  1. Log into your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)
  2. Find DNS Settings or DNS Management
  3. Add the MX record:
    • Type: MX
    • Host: @ (or leave blank)
    • Points to: mail.atriomail.com
    • Priority: 10
    • TTL: 3600 (or Auto)
  4. Add the SPF, DMARC, DKIM and Amazon SES records exactly as the DNS Setup dialog shows them
  5. Save changes
⚠️ Important: DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to be seen everywhere.

Step 4: Check the records in AtrioMail

  1. Go back to Email Domains
  2. Use the refresh icon (circular arrows) on the domain's row on the domain to re-check the live records
  3. The domain shows its DNS status in the list. If it says DNS Automation Pending, the records were not written for you and you need to add them by hand.
✅ Next: once the domain is ready, you can create mailboxes on it under Email Mailboxes. Creating your first mailbox starts your subscription.

Common Issues

The DNS check still fails

  • Wait longer: DNS can take up to 48 hours
  • Compare each record with the DNS Setup dialog, character for character
  • Make sure there are no typos, extra spaces or added quote characters
  • Make sure there is only one SPF record on the domain
  • Contact support if it is still failing after 48 hours

Emails Not Receiving

  • Verify MX record is correct: mail.atriomail.com
  • Check priority is set to 10
  • Remove any old MX records from previous email provider
💡 Pro Tip: Copy your existing mail across with Email Migrations before you change the MX record, so nothing is left behind on the old server.
